Ratios des rations de Costalfa

Even if it is possible to serve up to 6.8 kg (15 lb) or more cubes per horse per day, a quantity of 12.5 kg (2-6 lb) of cubes per horse per day can be used as a hay length if the horses have access to little hay and if the hay is of poor quality. (source Ontario, MAAAR 0905).

Forage, including long hay and/or graminated and pasture legumes, has always been the cornerstone of horse feeding. A good source of forage shall provide at least 50% of the forage consumed daily by the horse; 5,4-6,8 kg (12-15 lb) of dry hay for an average adult horse.

Although fodders are an important source of energy, protein, minerals and vitamins, they also provide fibre, a "nutritious element" that horses also need.

Long hay and pasture graminates contain more than 20% raw cellulose, while most cereal mixtures, even those known as "complete" foods, contain less than 12% fibre.

Horses can adapt to balanced rations that do not contain hay or grazing, but the absolute minimum intake of necessary fibres has not been established.

Studies reveal, however, that poor fibre or concentrated rations increase the risk of gastric colic and ulcers and significantly increase the propensity of the horse to chew wood. (source Ontario, MAAAR 0905).
